Colour Schemes for Living Rooms 2017

Are you feeling gloomy now that winter 2017 is in full swing? Do you see nothing but dull greys each time you walk into your sunless living room? Don’t worry. Rich, bright colours are right on trend this year!

The Pantone Colour Institute predicts rich, bright colours to be the trend we’ll see in living rooms across the country this year. Unveiling their upcoming palettes at the 2016 International Home + Housewares Show, Pantone explained they had been inspired by brightly-coloured films, such as Pixar’s Inside Out and Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

However, that’s not an excuse to run out and decorate your living room with starscapes and lightsabers. This year’s trends are set to be bold and sophisticated, with shades of dusky blue reclaimed and repurposed furniture to be hot property, along with bright yellow accessories creating a warm and cosy atmosphere.

Looking at what companies have chosen as their Colour of the Year for 2017 is a very good place to start if you want a thoroughly up-to-date living room. Benjamin Moore chose a “rich, deep amethyst” named “Shadow” which makes a room dimmer but also gives it a sense of luxury. On the other end of the spectrum, Sherwin-Williams chose a neutral but warm shade called “Poised Taupe.”

Before you set about repainting your living room, in these colours or otherwise, you need to consider exactly how you want your room to feel. Blue can stimulate your brain cells and increase your efficiency, making a blue room packed with books the ideal place to work and learn.

Green is a fresh and outdoorsy colour, ideal for those who have their living room open out to a garden. White and other light colours can open up a small room and make it seem bigger, especially if you put a mirror or bright lights in there as well. On the other hand, if you have small children in the house you may not want too much white or overly bright, over stimulating colours.

Remember, despite the delights of fashionable palettes, don’t be afraid to go wildly off-trend if you want to – your colour scheme is for your living room, and for you.
